The usual program at the birthday event consists of a social hour; a ceremonial cake cutting; a Champagne toast to the Marine Corps followed by a dinner for all Marines, guests and friends from all Military services.

A special table is set up in remembrance of all missing comrades in arms. This table consists of the following: a white table cloth; a dinner plate + cup/saucer inverted; a single red rose in a vase tied with a red ribbon; a pinch of salt and a slice of lemon, a single POW/MIA flag set is on the table and a POW/MIA cover is placed on the back of the chair.

The detachment commandant will read the Marine Corps birthday message from the current Commandant of the Marine Corps. This is followed by a prayer from the detachment chaplain. Then the National Anthem and the Marine Corps Hymn is played. Afterwards, the birthday cake is brought out followed by the Oldest and Youngest Marine present.

Prior to the actual cutting of the cake by the detachment commandant, the narrator will read the 1921 birthday message of Commandant Marine Corps General John Lejeune.

The birthday cake is then cut with the 1st piece presented to the Oldest Marine and the 2nd piece to the Youngest Marine. After both the oldest and youngest Marine have taken a bite of the cake, a champagne toast is made to the Marine Corps followed by dinner.

Some Marine Installations and Detachments follow the dinner with a dance, or invite all present to take a chance in a raffle or silent auction. It is a night of friendship and comradery for all.
